Vinyl Floor Cleaning Done Right

Vinyl floors are affordable and are a popular choice for many of todays homes. Like all flooring, vinyl must be cleaned and protected to keep it looking great and to preserve it's life. Here is how you can turn your vinyl floors into something that you will be proud of.

1. Clean on a regular basis. Vinyl floors should be cleaned as often as they get dirty. This means that if the floors begin to accumulate dirt, hair, animal dander, food crumbs or other debris, then sweeping or vacuuming same is necessary. Do not leave debris on your floors for long as the vinyl can get scratched or fade.

2. Clean with a home solution. There are any number of products you can use to clean your vinyl floors. Most of these are expensive and may do more harm than good over the long term. A home solution can be effective and work quite well, including one we will examine at the next step.

3. Tend to soiled areas. Sections of your vinyl floor may be especially dirty and will need to be tended to separately. Take a rag, dip it in hot water and then wipe across the affected area. Then, add a drop of Dawn dishwasher detergent to the rag and wipe it into the affected area by a circular motion. Allow to set for at least five minutes before wiping clean with a dry cloth.

4. Remove wax build up. Perhaps you we're using one of those store bought cleansers and have observed a waxy buildup. One application of wax may look great, but with multiple applications you face a build up that should be removed. A homemade solution to this conundrum is to mix three parts hot water to one part isopropyl alcohol to remove the wax. Take a clean towel, soak it in the solution and clean in a circular motion. If the entire floor is affected, then add that solution to a bucket and use a clean mop to remove same.

5. Remove scuff marks. Scuff marks are black streaks left behind on floors from furniture, ladders, toys and hard rubber shoe bottoms. For small scuff marks, a pencil eraser can usually remove these. For shoe marks you can use a baking soda past composed of two tablespoons of baking soda with warm water. Apply to a clean, soft cloth and wipe the affected area. Then, wipe dry. Toothpaste, WD-40 and even lighter fluid have also been suggested as ways to remove scuff marks notes Chem-Dry.

6. Attack persistent stains. Your best efforts to clean your vinyl floors may have been thwarted. After viewing your work, you notice a stain that is persistent, one that won't go away without much effort. At this point you might consider a new solution using one part bleach to three parts water. Soak a clean towel in the solution and set the towel on top of the affected area for one hour. When the time is up, remove the rag. If the stain remains, repeat until it has been removed.

Flooring Considerations

Vinyl flooring is cheap and easy to maintain. It is also subject to discoloration and wear. Keep your vinyl flooring looking sharp through your regular cleaning efforts.
